Supporting Homeless and Foster Youth

Helendale School District is committed to ensuring that all students experiencing homelessness or in foster care receive the educational support and services they need to succeed academically. Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, students experiencing homelessness have the right to immediate enrollment in school, even without typically required documents like transcripts or immunization records. These students can choose to remain in their school of origin or enroll in the school where they are currently staying, with free transportation provided when feasible. Our district collaborates closely with families and caregivers to remove barriers to education and maintain continuity of learning during periods of housing instability.

Foster youth face unique challenges that can significantly impact their educational experience, including frequent school changes, gaps in academic records, and emotional trauma. California's AB 490 and other state laws provide additional protections for foster students, including the right to remain in their school of origin when placement changes occur and priority access to supplemental educational services. We work collaboratively with social services, foster families, and group homes to create stable learning environments that help these students build the skills and confidence needed for future success.
