Welcome to Helendale School District

The Helendale School District serves the close-knit community of Helendale, set in San Bernardino County's high desert alongside historic Route 66. Our schools educate students from transitional kindergarten through high school, and our families value both educational excellence and the unique opportunities that come with small-town community living.

Striving to meet the needs of our diverse student body, the District provides a wide array of programs, including special education, English Language Learner support, athletics, advanced placement courses, and career exploration. We are committed to preparing every student for success in the 21st century through innovative teaching practices and real-world learning experiences.

Our Community

Helendale, also known as Silver Lakes, sits in the Victor Valley of the Mojave Desert, roughly 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles and midway between Victorville and Barstow. It is a rare desert community built around two shimmering manmade lakes, North Lake and South Lake, where families enjoy open water, wide skies, and the kind of room to breathe that is hard to find in Southern California.

At nearly 2,500 feet of elevation, the high desert here is known for its clear weather and big horizons. Local lore even nicknamed the area “the hole in the sky” for the way storms so often part around it. It is a setting that shapes who we are: grounded, neighborly, and proud of a place where everyone knows your name.

A Place with History

Long before it was Helendale, this stretch of the Mojave was known as Point of Rocks, a waypoint on ancient desert trails traveled by the Mojave and Serrano peoples and, later, by explorers, the Mormon Battalion, and even a Pony Express station built of stone beside the river. When the Santa Fe Railroad arrived in the 1880s, a depot took root. The stop was renamed “Helen” in 1897 in honor of a railroad executive's daughter, and became “Helendale” in 1918.

In 1926, Route 66 was paved through town, earning Helendale a lasting place on America's most storied highway, a heritage still celebrated today at roadside landmarks like Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch. That blend of deep roots and forward motion is exactly what our district stands for: remembering the past, and reaching for the future.
